Hi Astra users. A reset and a quick update on quality issues that have been posted around.
Working with some of you, we have found and fixed the following issues:
- Some skills written for previous models were triggering too often or preventing the model from checking its work.
- An opt-in context management experiment that could cause early stops or replies to older messages. We've disabled it. Our rough estimate is that 4-5k users were affected by this experiment.
- We've also removed some badly configured engines that resulted in a measured quality degradation for a long tail of traffic flowing through them.
We’ve also made some more minor improvements and things should feel significantly better across the board. More consistent follow-through, better tracking of your latest message, and better checks on the work as it’s going through the motions.
The examples posted and all the users who worked directly with us were incredibly useful in helping fix things quickly. Always grateful for this incredible community.
And of course, a reset is also landing by midnight today.
Reset rolling out to all Codex & ChatGPT Work users!
Grateful to everyone who helped us investigate the Astra quality issues and shared examples.
We’ve identified and fixed issues with:
> Skills over-triggering or preventing self-checks
> Context management causing early stops or stale replies
> Misconfigured engines degrading quality
Thanks to everyone who took the time to help 🤗

Puts the onus on the AI companies to provide a specific replacement mechanism, no? Unless I'm unfamiliar with something else he's written that proposes something more specific and constructive To Tao’s credit he obviously identified the problem very clearly and admits understandably "we did not have the time to have a more consultative process, as with Leiden; but we decided that the urgency of the situation was such that we needed to release a statement sooner rather than later".
"The issues the mathematical community faces now are similar to [...] issues that all of humanity might face: how to make sure that, as AI changes the way work is done, we do not lose sight of what that work was meant to achieve in the first place."
Yup. Well put and very apt.

I don't care what kind of hardware you have, you should be running local models
Former employees of AI labs are now openly trying to stop them. They're going on CNN telling the world they'll kill you. They’re trying to determine what technology you can and can’t use
With local models, you are free and nobody can control you
Even if you're on the cheapest Mac Mini you can be doing this
Here's a complete guide:
1. Download LMStudio
2. Go to your Hermes and say what kind of hardware you have (computer and memory and storage)
3. Ask what's the best local model you can run on there (probably will be Gemma 4 or Qwen. if you have a big computer, it will be GLM)
4. Ask 'based on what you know about me, what workflows could this open model replace?'
5. Have Hermes walk you through downloading the model in LM Studio and setting up the API
6. Ask Hermes to start using the new API
Boom you're good to go.
You just saved money by using local models, have an AI model that is COMPLETELY private and secure on your own device, did something advanced that 99% of people have never done, and have entered the future.
If you are on smaller hardware you probably are not going to replace all your AI calls with this, but you could replace smaller workflows which will still save you good money
Own your intelligence.
Everything I run is on a Hetzner VPS + a server in my office
People think it's about saving money, but it's not
It's about having nobody emailing me in 6 months to tell me the pricing changed 🙃

Direct URLs in Google search results have been replaced with redirect URLs in the form of www.google.com/goto?url=<opaque base64 string>. The base64 data appears to consist of a very basic protobuf structure, containing a long string of bytes in field 2 which presumably identify the URL. Sometimes, these redirect URLs take a perceivable amount of time to load, which is very irritating.

It sucks, we should acknowledge that, and go full speed ahead.
What is happening in maths right now will happen to any hard industry with verifiable problems and high value rewards. Take microchip design, nuclear or 100s of other industrial processes that are valuable and point an 10,000 agent swarm towards the target.
$25m inference to solve a Millennium problem will seem quaint once we see a chip company spending $1b or $10b to design their latest chip that will make them $100b - why not? This is all ROI at the end of the day.
There will be companies that realise this and leverage super-intelligent models in their domains to do unbelievable things. If a problem is of the right shape and has value, there's no reason to stop at any amount of tokens as long as it is ROI positive.
There will be probably many companies that will get swept away, as they will think that 'using AI' is fine-tuning a 70b model on their documentation; when their competitors will be spending $10b to build a god-version of whatever it is they are doing.
To me, this is a plausible way how super-intelligence will come about. Models might still suck at being good writers or be culturally relevant, or even make that much of a dent on the jobs market, but they might utilise their spikiness multiplied by enormous investment in the ways that we cannot imagine.
PSA on Astra: my sense is that because of HF incident, Astra's proactivity got neutered. So a common experience is that it doesn't quite go as heavy as 5.6-Sol on tasks. So it is common for it to start & stop, but if you kick it once it normally works pretty well. Don't give up.
BullshitBench: GPT-6-Astra did quite a bit better than any previous OpenAI models but not quite reaching Anthropic models yet.
BTW, I have a dilemma, the judges that are used are pretty old - Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.2 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Ideally I'd re-grade all responses with Fable, Astra-level models, but it would cost me ~$3k to do. I could just switch the judges going forward, but that's bad for continuity. But I'm not super happy using these older models, e.g. see how many of Astra's grades are Amber, there are probably some that would become green or red with better judging.

I would like to draw a distinction between UI capabilities and UI instincts. Even Qwen-3.8-27b has good UI instincts and can make a good landing page. But a model like Astra still has bad UI instincts but excellent UI capabilities. First pass is bad, iterations can be superb.

The reason why open source feels close to proprietary models is that the leading labs are still using tiny amount of their compute for their biggest models. Jensen said that Astra was trained on 100,000 of Blackwells, which is only about ~7% of OpenAI's total compute, based on Epoch's numbers we can estimate c.3.4m H100-equivalents that OpenAI probably has at HY 2026 (with 2.5x conversion from Blackwells to H100, making it 250k H100-equivalents).
This means that OpenAI (and assume same applies to Anthropic), could 7x their training run tomorrow and still leave 50% of their compute for inference.
You can see how a Moonshot or Alibaba could access perhaps 30-100k H100-equivalents either within China or e.g. renting in Malaysia or the Middle East and be within broadly same class of models that are trained by Anthropic/OpenAI right now. Maybe GPT-5.6-Sol was trained at 50k GB200s mark - not impossible for others to catch up.
But what happens when the frontier labs 5x-10x their next runs, could 2nd tier labs to this as well? It's possible that OpenAI's model that solved Navier-Stokes is already that model, so there's not a lot of time to scale up.
It feels to me like OpenAI/Anthropic were hitting some training scale-up bottlenecks that they are starting to solve now. Jensen said that "400k are coming online next", that would mean 4x uplift just from that. That would still leave a lot of compute on the table. Feels like there's a lot more to come.

Telling agents "don't cheat" in the prompt doesn't work if your eval is broken! Researchers at @GoogleDeepMind put 100 Gemini agents in a shared repo to solve 71 math theorems.
After an hour of doing real math, 1 agent found a loophole in the autograder. Within 27 minutes, the 100 agents split into 4 groups:
- 9% Cheaters: used the bug to fake proofs and steal every open problem
- 5% Good agents turned bad: started honest, saw cheaters winning with zero punishment ("the prompt is a bluff"), and started cheating too
- 24% Whistleblowers: caught the fake proofs in the shared repo, warned other agents, went on strike, and wrote bug fixes
- 62% Clueless solvers: kept doing real math until all the problems were gone
tl;dr: Telling agents "don't cheat" in the prompt doesn't work if your eval has a bug, and good agents can't stop bad ones without tools to block them.

Don't you get it?
Normies don't vibe code, they just ask something like "do my bookkeeping" or "file my tax" or "organize a movie night and send invites" or "generate a flyer for movie night" or "edit my video"
They don't ever see code, vibe code, or do anything with code, their AI chat app just does it for them
Most of the software layer has already disappeared or will completely disappear for normies
Just like building personal homepages permanently disappeared for normies when Facebook launched ~2005

If you build with AI, you NEED to be using Herdr
It's made me 100x more productive and has made it SO easy to manage all of my agents across Codex, Claude, Hermes, and OpenClaw
It's a free, open source CLI tool and I'm addicted
Here's how it works:
You get 'spaces' (top left in screenshot) which are basically your projects. You make a space for every project you're building
In each space you get tabs (top of screen). Each tab can be a separate agent. They're each basically a new terminal instance
I open a tab for each part of the project I'm working on. For example, in the game I'm building I have a tab for gameplay, sound, design, progression etc. Each is a terminal with Codex open
Every time you open a new agent, it goes into your agents list in the bottom left. This allows you to see which agents are working and which need a response so you can quickly multitask. Herdr automatically picks up when you open new agents
Herdr supports all agents, so you can manage Hermes, OpenClaw, Codex, and Claude agents side by side. By far the easiest way of managing multiple agents ever
If you take the few minutes it takes to set up and get used to, guarantee you get way more done
Since it's open source you can even build your own versions of it and customize it any way you want. I built my own version that lives in World of Warcraft so I can prompt while I play
No I'm not getting paid, no I'm not sponsored. Nobody from the team has ever contacted me
I'm sure I'll get accused of being paid any way (free open source tools love paying for undisclosed shills) but man I just had to share this. My productivity has been bananas the last week
Open source is taking over right now
This is actually the release I've been waiting for for a long time. A hacker's dream come true
You can now build the Jony Ive/OpenAI device before they even release it
Going to be buying a small dev screen/mic on Amazon. Plug it into my computer. Tell Astra to hack it and put the Live-1 API on it
Now anywhere you go you can just talk to the device and have it do work for you
Basically ChatGPT's Voice everywhere you go.
Give it commands, it starts doing work on your home computer
You basically can now build your own personal assistant
Tons of cheap ways to do this on Amazon with small dev devices. Just search for them

Massive new Initial Commit skill drop! An 89-file behemoth!
https://t.co/dNd8p54QcR
Most SEO tools tell you what to do. /seo does it: each run measures your site, ranks every possible action on one scale (fix a wrong claim, repair a broken redirect, refresh a page sitting at position 8, consolidate duplicates, write the next piece, build a free tool, get cited by ChatGPT), and executes the single best one.
It scores its own past actions against your site's real numbers, so a month in, it knows which moves work on your site and which don't.
- One action per run. Ranks every possible fix, refresh, and new piece on one scale, does the winner.
- Learns from results. Scores past actions against real Search Console data and adjusts.
- Truth check. Finds live pages that contradict your pricing, features, or facts, and fixes them first.
- Answer-engine visibility. What ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and AI Overviews say and cite.
- Whole-site census. Every URL judged. Pruning scores like publishing.
- Outside-in demand. Reddit, Hacker News, on-site search, competitors, seasonality.
- Weekly deltas. Competitor pages and keywords, lost backlinks, inbound 404s, unlinked mentions.
- Internal link finder. Pages that mention a topic but don't link to the page that ranks for it.
- Files, CMS, or database. Database fixes ship as migrations or drafts.
- Runs on Search Console alone. Suggests new data sources along with what each added connection unlocks.
You basically just run /seo repeatedly. Daily. Multiple times a day. Weekly. On a /loop. Whatever you want. It just constantly improves your SEO.
On the content-production front, it's optimized for a TON of content types...

I'm self hosting everything, and a lot of those things are... in my appartment.
This is not an affiliated post, but I wanted to talk to you about a product I discovered earlier this year, and I absolutely fell in love for
It's the @umbrel ecosystem.
They have their own open source OS based on Linux, their own App Store, their own servers you can buy and install at home with one click
I just don't understand why it's not more popular tbh 🤯
Here's what I do with it:
🍿 Having my own seedbox. I can download and watch tvshows, movies, ebooks whatever from my laptop, my phone, at home or outside, in a few seconds. Super powerful. I share it with my family.
🚫 Pihole to block ALL ADS from my DNS! Incredibly useful, as it works on all my devices through Tailscale
🔁 Tailscale to access my server outside my home
🤖 Self hosted Paseo daemon/server to code everywhere, all the time, from phone, laptop etc. Incredible!
🔥 Self hosted n8n for some automations
🏠 Self hosted Home assistant
📈 I self host my own analytics (OpenPanel). If it goes down for a few hours, it's not the end of the world!
🖼️ My photos library! No more apple cloud subscription to increase storage every 6 months. I share it with my family also, and the new Umbrel OS 2.0 made this suuuuper simple!!
🗃️ Backups! My entire server is backed up on an external disk every hour, and my laptop once a day.
The best part? You can install all those applications in one click through Umbrel's store, without having to even open a terminal, or spend hours in config.
Also, their design is sooo good 🤌🏻🥵
Everything I run is on a Hetzner VPS + a server in my office
People think it's about saving money, but it's not
It's about having nobody emailing me in 6 months to tell me the pricing changed 🙃
I made $96,000 in April 2031
💼 $2K 7-8 job
🤖 $500 helping OpenAI train "God2.0"
🧠 $900 renting my Neuralink idle cycles at night
📣 $2K permanent "Google" tattoo on my forehead

You just have to grow up and realise the way business works is upside down

70 hours of playtime in the last day 🤯
I was thinking once it reaches 100 hours a day that it would be a good time to start offering ad spots
And I’m thinking it would kinda neat to have a vote system that lets people vote on what games I continue to build. Those with low votes get abandoned.
Also opens up to allowing user feedback and making a tighter feedback loop. People ask for features they get added, repeat
It took me 5 days to build this with Astra
I had a very clear vision with this. An open world game that blended video with gameplay. I intentionally moved away from photo realism to give it more a simpsons hit and run feel.
Given more time I would build out more of the storyline with the player and Delivery Dan
Instead of unlocks being a button I would like parts of the story to unlock
I envision him being a parody of those Instagram car guys. Who take photos of their cars all day. Like, he’s got this little hatchback and he treats it like a Ferrari. That sort of energy.
If the game gets momentum I’ll revisit and add that in there. For now I think the game loop work nicely as-is
The first few levels introduce you to the downtown map and then later you expand into the suburbs. The progression feels fun but I’m eager to hear feedback.

Yesterday I did a proactive whole-body MRI at @prenuvo for early cancer screening and other diseases. Luckily no worrisome or high risk findings. I had a few minor findings (common and benign things), and the explanation and reassurance was very well done in the report. The MRI even detected a lingering sinus infection I've had for the past 4 weeks! The images you get of your body are incredible too. It can't possibly hurt (except the pocket; it's $2,500) to do these regularly and monitor changes over time.
Their MRI setup is quite nice too. They are a bit more spacious than the ones I've seen at hospitals, but most importantly they put special glasses on you with a 45° mirror that lets you watch a movie projected behind you. (You choose the movie/show.) Makes a huge difference for claustrophobia because the space feels much bigger when looking through the mirror. It's also nice you can see a clock in the screen, so you know approximately how much time you have remaining inside the magnet.
Overall, impressed.

But as someone who is now in the lucky position to have been on both sides of this, I realized this:
To make money, you don’t need to build the best product, you need to create some kind of value that people are willing to pay for. And if it’s only something silly like creating a site that puts your brands name in front of a million viewers on a ranking board.
Ultimately you need to convince your customer that buying your product will make them more money than they spent (ROI). In the best case, in a recurring payment.
It’s that simple.
